By Trevor Johnson

First of all, what is impotence in men? Male impotence, or erectile dysfunction, as it is commonly called, can be a total or partial disruption of an erection. A partial disruption of an erection can be something like the erection not being hard enough or not being able to sustain it.

There are many treatment options ranging from surgery to implants to medication to counseling. Almost 15 million men in the US alone have dealt with this or will deal with this at some point in their lives.

Male impotence can afflict any age at any time and has many different causes. The first difference is whether it is primary or secondary impotence. Primary is having impotence sense birth, while secondary is getting it later in life. Another difference is whether the cause is biological or psychological. However, biological problems are more prevalent.

A number of biological problems can be the cause of male impotence. Problems with the veins and nerves in the penis are common in men with impotence. A hormonal imbalance could also be the answer. In the case of hormones, it is usually the sex drive that is affected rather than whether or not a person can achieve erection.

Male impotence can also be the result of substance abuse. Alcohol, smoking, and illegal drugs all play a role in making it so men cannot achieve an erection. Smoking in particular can even affect the sperm badly. Smoking can cause blockages in arteries and can cause restriction of blood flow to the penis.

Alcohol, as well, can damage the body. Specifically it attacks the nervous system. In the context of erection, it cuts off the signals between the brain and the penis, thus making it difficult to achieve erection. It may also cause significant problems with hormones causing the sex drive to be lowered a causing more problems with erection.

Male impotence need not be a part of your life. By adjusting certain lifestyle choices and talking to the family health care professional, you can start moving towards a better you. - 31369
